The detective worked a mission handyman's murder back through a box of wire recordings the dead man had used to sell penitents their own confessions, and found wound on the same spool both the killer's motive and an old, unforgivable crime belonging to a man who had quietly remade himself in the years since. He walked out with the whole archive, fed the reel to the furnace, and left the law with nothing. When Dale asked what he would write in the file, the answer stopped one word short of honest.
