Marchetti neither employer nor antagonist since the streak began: absent 032-036, incidental unpaid source 037-038, absent 039-041, reappeared 042 as the cannery's labor-contract holder but indifferent to the superintendent's fate. Case 043: directly fielded the detective's ask on Brogan's behalf, let Rourke's name stand, and wrote the favor down — most direct engagement since Case 031. Case 044: called the marker — the detective's clean name on a dock purge list; confirmed before leaving the debt was served, not paid. Absent 045-046. Case 047: let the old man's call stand for nothing, then showed the detective the new shape — the top runs on borrowed loyalty, no muscle and no name, everyone holding someone else's marker, including Marchetti himself. Absent 048. Open: when he calls again and in what coin.

The vow's letter holds (he took no marker of his own), but its spirit broke in Case 032: he walked into the Blue Room and took something from its desk. Case 039 tested it sideways — a dock crew offered to wipe a dead man's Blue Room marker for a widow's silence about a murder. Open: whether ordinary muscle truly has reach into that book, or just lied to a frightened woman. Untouched 040-048.

Since 032 the detective has seen the Blue Room's ledger of futures directly and holds one page. Open: what else it says, who else is bound; and (039) whether the book's reach runs far enough down the docks for a crew to erase a dead docker's marker, or that was a bluff to buy a widow's silence. New in Case 032: the girl refused rescue, saying it would cost the others still in the book. Open: whether that's loyalty, fear, or a house line, and whether the detective accepts it as final. Untouched 033-048.

New in Case 032. Something governs the Blue Room's ledger that even Marchetti won't cross. Its name, face, and reach are completely unknown. Case 047 deepened: Marchetti showed the detective the borrowed-loyalty shape — he himself is only holding somebody's marker; the hand above may not be singular muscle but an entire borrowed structure running through every desk in the city. Whether the Blue Room answers to the same chain or stands apart is OPEN.

New in Case 032. For the first time in the series, Marchetti has a limit that isn't the detective's own conscience. Whether that's respect, fear, or a standing arrangement is unopened. Case 047 deepened it: Marchetti is himself only holding borrowed paper — the thing he won't touch may be above him the same way he is above others.

Case 043: the detective came to him voluntarily on Brogan's behalf; Marchetti let Rourke's name stand and wrote the favor in his own ledger. Case 044: he called the marker — the detective's clean name on a hiring-hall purge list — and confirmed the debt served, not paid. Absent 045-046. Case 047: let the old man's call stand for nothing — no debt written, no favor declared — and showed the detective the borrowed-loyalty shape instead. Absent 048. The detective's own word, spoken to close the fighter's contract in Case 031, remains on record as the thing that made Marchetti's stable-grab look fair. Case 044: called again — his word went on a dock purge list, lending the authority of his name to a cut that took an honest man from the gate. Untouched 045-048.

Dale named it outright in Case 031: the leash only feels like a favor until the day it doesn't. In Case 043 it tightened by one explicit loop — the detective went hat in hand to Marchetti for Brogan's sake, and Marchetti let him know the favor was written down. Case 044 is the day it didn't feel like a favor: Marchetti pulled the loop and the detective's clean name ran on a dock purge that cut an honest man from the gate, with the debt marked served but not closed. Case 047: Marchetti let the old man stand for nothing — no loop written. Whether that's the borrowed-loyalty machine in motion or a deferred price is open. Untouched 048-052.

Silent since 024: the reorganization board's real sponsor was never named. Open whether any thread shares a hand at the top — but every actor since traces no higher than itself (regulation clerk, walking boss, radio sponsor's private squeeze, 041's self-ruining fraud, 042's skimming superintendent and indifferent Marchetti, 043's squeeze traced to Marchetti directly, 044's purge run through Marchetti's own written marker, 045's wholesale market boss ordinary and unconnected, 046's burial society secretary keeping faith on behalf of a dead man's widow with no boss or lever behind any of it, 047's gate squeeze traced immediately to Marchetti — who this time is himself only holding borrowed paper, 048's advance man an ordinary skimmer answering to no one above his own greed).

Unchanged. The examiner's read of the detective is now on the record in full, formal, and permanent form; the larger institutional silence about the condemnation order and the man at the top remains fully intact. Untouched through Case 048.

Three carried names; 034 may add Eddie a fourth. 035-036 cost him his own exposure; 037 surfaced an old debt run the other way — his own name spent by someone else years back. 038-043 added nothing owed to him. 044 may add a fifth — the honest woman's brother, cut from the gate on the detective's own word while she thanked him for something else. Case 045: the fifth debt sharpened — he freed the same man, and the sister left holding the question of how he'd known, which is the same shape as owning the cut without admitting it. Case 046 carries no new named debt. Case 047 carries no new named debt — Brogan's oath was honored and the old man ate; the cost the detective carried was the walk to Marchetti's door, which ran through no one else's bread. Deepened in Case 036: the machine's reach now runs past the detective's business license and the claims of people around him into a formal personal registration of the man himself — complete in every particular but a name. Case 047: he walked into that machine with his registered face to hold one old man's call — the file is now the floor he stands on when he goes to Marchetti. Untouched otherwise.

The girl twenty years dead. Every road sealed. Untouched through Case 048.

Flynn keeps helping (033, 035, an out in 036, a tip in 037) without ever touching the sealed Farrows thread. Absent 038-039, a mere listener in 040, absent 041-042; active again in 043 — he traced Rourke's squeeze to its root and handed the detective the name he needed. Absent 044-048; active again in 049 — present at the Chronicle newsroom, named the paid redemption desk as a rate-card racket, identified the Wednesday courier pattern that led the detective to the broker. Absent 050-051. Farrows thread untouched a fifteenth case running.

Brogan reappeared in Case 043 — off the force, carrying dock-beat loyalties a badge can no longer back — and walked away believing his old debt was settled clean. Returned again in 047, called in the old dock-beat loyalty one last time; the old man ate, and Brogan walked off believing his oath had held clean, because this time it did. What he left in Flynn of the Chronicle's keeping remains locked and untouched; the two threads (his personal oath, his larger evidence) have not connected. The arrangement from Case 016 is still in the ledger. The respectable thief is still walking. The dead clerk's name is clear.

Since 036 the detective is fully registered but nameless in the licensing machine. 037-040 arrived or tested gently; 041 tested discretion (a torch singer's question she'd hide even from the man she loves); 042 the plainest yet (a cannery forewoman via reputation); 043 through Brogan — an old loyalty, not a stranger; 044 through Marchetti's own summons — not a client's knock but a creditor's call. 045 through a genuine client — a tired woman's need — who brought the 044 thread through the door in the form of a question he couldn't close. 046 through a widow's grief — the immigrant quarter, not the waterfront machine — a door as genuine as any. 047 through Brogan's loyalty again — he walked into the machine with his registered face to hold one old man's call, the file now the floor he stands on when he goes to Marchetti. 048: a revival witness at the lunch counter recognized him by standing before name — the registered face doing its work in ordinary company, unremarkable, as if it had always been this way. New 038. The boxing commission acted fast and clean on the detective's evidence, pulling a promoter's rented muscle before the bell at no cost to his drawer. Open: whether Calloway Bay has more than one honest civic institution alongside the license examiner. Untouched 039-048.

New Case 039. The widow's silence was bought not with cash but with her family's place at the morning call — the gate can threaten a witness, not just a worker. Untouched by Cases 040-048.

New Case 039. An earlier winch death under the same walking boss, quietly signed off years back, is what made the second death provable as murder rather than misfortune. Whether that earlier victim's family ever learns the truth is OPEN. Untouched by Cases 040-048.

Nothing to spend; the wall was already there. 052: he spent the truth itself, completely and publicly — played the cylinder into the room knowing the confession would be absorbed rather than exposed, knowing the assembly had already decided. The cost was himself: called a grave-robber by the hall that had just forgiven everything he played, carrying the understanding that the spending changed nothing about the outcome but gave the dead man the only thing he had ever needed.

New in Case 039. The moment she spoke, the men who'd fed her family all winter looked at the harbor instead of at her. What that ostracism costs her, and whether it ever thaws, is completely unresolved. Untouched by Cases 040-048.

New 040. A radio sponsor used a show's airtime to demand a performer inform on the broadcast partner she loved, trading his exposure for her airtime — nothing provably a crime, and he walked clean. Open: one man's cruelty or standing practice among the city's advertisers. Untouched 041-048.

New 040. The hiring-gate scarcity governs the airwaves too: who's heard depends on who a sponsor pays for. 042 deepened it — a third instance at a cannery gate confirmed the logic runs beyond docks and airwaves, and this time the man wielding it was stopped. Untouched 041, 043-048.

New 040. She chose silence and the loss of her own livelihood over giving up the man she loved. Open: whether he ever learns, whether the friendship survives, whether she works in this city again. 041 echoed it from the other side of the desk — the detective chose the silence, and the person it protected never learned. Untouched 042-048.

New 041. The man promising to carry the singer out of Calloway Bay travels under a dead man's name, and the pier crew he once informed on to save his skin knows he's slipping town. Open: whose name he took and how, whether the dead man's history surfaces, and whether the crew comes for him now the boat's gone. Untouched 042-048.

New 041. He bought her passage out by spending down the last of his hidden safety — money, cover, whatever kept him breathing — and the detective read it plain: once her boat clears the harbor he won't last the winter. Open: whether that reading is right, and whether anyone besides the detective learns what her freedom cost him. Untouched 042-048.

New 041. She sailed out of Calloway Bay believing the man waiting for her is exactly who he claimed; the gap between that belief and the truth lives nowhere but in the detective, the only man on the pier who knows the whole of it. Open: whether it ever closes — by her learning it, or by consequences finding the man without her knowing. Untouched 042-048.

New 041, never formally closed. She hired the detective to answer one question — is he real — and got an answer that satisfied her completely without being the true one. The actual verdict lives in the detective alone. Open: whether she ever learns what she really asked, or what he found. Untouched 042-048.

New 042. A cannery forewoman was ordered to sell out the women organizing her line or lose her gate spot — the same who-eats scarcity as the docks and airwaves, confirmed a third time in a third industry. Open: whether it runs further into trades the detective hasn't touched. Untouched 043-048.

New 042. The superintendent's leverage over the forewoman was funded by a payroll he was quietly skimming — and that skim, not the threat, gave the detective something the law could hold. Open: how long it ran, how much, and whether anyone downstream profited from looking away. Untouched 043-048.

New 042. Marchetti holds the cannery's own labor contract and did nothing to shield the superintendent once the audit turned on him — the first time his indifference has actively helped the detective rather than merely left him alone. Case 047: Marchetti let the old man's gate call stand for nothing and showed the detective the borrowed-loyalty shape — his indifference has become something more complex than simply not caring. Case 044: the same lever turned against the detective's own name — the called marker ran through the gate list he put his word on. Case 045: the lever's 044 cut drove the brother to the wholesale market; the case was solved but the gate mechanism and who answers for it remain open. 046 absent. Case 047: the gate was the lever again, an old man's call held over his family; this time Marchetti let it stand for nothing and showed the detective the borrowed-loyalty shape underneath the lever itself. New 043. Marchetti let Rourke's name stand and made clear the favor was written down — not goodwill, a debt on record. Case 044: the loop was pulled — the detective's name went on a dock purge list to serve the marker; Marchetti confirmed before leaving: served, not paid. Absent 045-046. Case 047: Marchetti let the old man stand for nothing — no marker written, no loop added. Absent 048. Whether that's the borrowed-loyalty machine moving or a price deferred is open.

New 043. Brogan walked away from Case 043 believing a badge-era loyalty was honored clean, the old debt settled. The detective is holding the actual cost alone, in the dark. Case 044 deepened the chain — the 043 marker, born of Brogan's ask, was called in and cost an honest woman's brother his gate call. Case 045: the chain ran one step further without Brogan ever knowing. Case 047: Brogan came back and asked again; the old man ate, and Brogan walked away believing his oath had held clean — because this time it did, at the cost of the detective walking to Marchetti's door on his behalf again. New in 044. An honest woman's brother was cut from the gate for refusing to sell his crew, his name on a purge list the detective's own word authorized. She never learned. Case 045: the brother was freed from a wholesale market frame by the same man whose word cut the gate — she left with her brother safe and a question she couldn't close: how he'd known the shape of the trouble before she'd named it. She doesn't have the answer yet. 046-048 absent. Open: whether she comes back for it, whether the brother learns whose name was on the list, whether either finds the purge document.

New 044. The detective's clean name now appears on a dock purge document cutting men who refused Marchetti's terms. Case 045: the sister read his foreknowledge and asked how he'd known before she'd told him — she left without the answer, but the question is filed in her now. 046-048 absent. Open: whether the list surfaces, whether she or the brother brings the full account to him.

New 045. She left with her brother saved and the detective's name in her mouth like a splinter — she read his foreknowledge precisely enough to ask how he'd known the gate cut preceded her own telling of it. He held the answer. 046-048 absent. Open: whether she comes back for it, whether she names him to anyone who matters, whether her question ever closes into accusation.

New Case 047. Marchetti showed the detective the shape the top now runs on: no muscle and no name required, only markers passed hand to hand until no one can say whose debt it originally was — and Marchetti himself only holds somebody's. Untouched 048. Open: what it means for a debt-holder when the man holding his leash is himself only holding borrowed paper; whether the chain can be traced far enough to find the original creditor; and whether a man can use that knowledge or only carry it.

New Case 047. The old man could keep his gate call by selling out his crew and refused; Brogan's ask was honored without visible cost to anyone but the detective's walk. Marchetti let it stand for nothing. Untouched 048. Open: whether "for nothing" is the borrowed-loyalty machine extending grace or a price not yet named, and whether a man who won't sell his crew eats again next week on the same terms.

Opened Case 048: the revival's advance man went to a cell but the going rate stayed on record. Case 049 confirmed the rate sticks and found an institutional home: the Chronicle runs a paid redemption desk — absolution by the column-inch, the same racket as the revival, now in print. Flynn named it. Case 050 set against it: the old pastor's forgiveness — given for nothing, written nowhere — is the only absolution in the story that had no price. Case 051 completed the architecture: the parish's formal public forgiveness of a choir patron held as impenetrable armor — the detective confirmed the killing by ear and disc and still couldn't breach it. Case 052 ran the economy to its terminus: truth played aloud in the dead man's own voice into a hall assembled to forgive was absorbed whole — converted from confession into collective grace on the spot. A city that gathers to forgive will forgive anything it hears admitted. The armor doesn't need silence; it converts evidence into its own endorsement. Open: who else is using paid forgiveness as structural protection; whether Flynn's knowledge of the Chronicle's rate card becomes a pressure point; whether the pastor's off-the-books mercy holds differently than the parish's formally endorsed absolution; and whether a confession, once absorbed by a room full of forgiveness, can ever be turned back into evidence.

New Case 049. The anonymous architect who weaponized the Chronicle's paid redemption desk: fed a coerced broker's Wednesday deliveries with the full intention of printing the one truth that would get a woman killed. No face, no name, no thread to pull — the broker's death cut the only visible link and the hand turned to the sports page. Open: who the hand is, whether the desk gets used as a weapon again, and whether the woman ever learns what the column was actually for.

New Case 050. A mercy given for nothing, written nowhere, held in nothing but one man's continued breathing — now sealed in the detective's drawer alongside the only proof it ever happened. Open: whether a forgiveness that lives only in a drawer can hold, and whether the sexton understands what he has been given or only knows he was let go.

New Case 050. The old pastor forgave the sexton in private — asked nothing, wrote nothing down — and that act is now the drawer's seventh weight, preserved by the one man who knows both what was done and what was forgiven for it. Open: whether a forgiveness with no record outlasts the man who granted it, and whether the sexton carries it as grace or as the ordinary luck of a kind priest.

New Case 051 (plant_a_seed). The detective confirmed a killing beyond doubt and walked out of the chapel empty-handed because the parish's formal public forgiveness was the wall. Case 052 (pyrrhic_win) ran the full experiment from inside: he dropped the dead benefactor's true confession cylinder into the memorial hall, let the dead man's own voice unspool every admission, and the hall responded not with outrage but with collective grace — the truth absorbed whole, the man canonized in the act of confessing. The armor doesn't just hold; it converts. Truth played publicly into assembled forgiveness becomes endorsement. Open: whether any seam exists that doesn't run through the institution's own willingness; whether the organ disc from Case 051 could ever surface in a different room with a different assembly and a different outcome; and what it means that the detective now carries the full architecture confirmed — tested by obstruction and tested from inside — with no instrument left to breach it.
