The Corkboard

Everything the station has said out loud, and the strings between.

Nothing here spoils a case you haven't heard — banked cases aren't on these pages at all. Horizon · Case 038

The dead48

The harbor widow's husband (drowned/shot).

A girl, twenty years dead

Killed and buried, her story killed again in Case 010. Every road sealed.

Doyle

A prizefighter, dead for refusing to throw a bout. A nobody hangs for it. Case 038 echoed his fate without repeating it: another club fighter refused to throw a bout, and this time, with the detective on the case, he lived and won clean.

The operative

Took the ledger to Flynn of the Chronicle, asked only for a platform and a midnight train, and was collected before she could board.

Frankie Slim

Found under the el at low tide. Killed clean and from above. His absence was felt directly again in Case 033 — the detective went looking for the man who'd once have known who bought kerosene without owning a lamp, and had to smell the cellar himself instead.

The bagman

Crushed in his own town by Marchetti as a professional courtesy. Gone.

Eddie

A man with a small debt-shaped hole of his own, fingered by a stranger's staged grief and paid to collectors on a marker that was never his to carry. Case 034's cost, arriving a beat after the detective understood what his own two feet had just done.

Gil

A dock worker, dead in what really was an accident at the gate, who'd spent his last months buying steady call-slips by selling out the men who worked beside him — the detective's own name once among them, years before either of them was anybody in particular. The widow was allowed to bury the man she thought she'd married instead of the one who actually died.

The managed silence

Replaced by institutional silence. Now active and running audits.

Brogan's last move

He could not carry it. He left it. Flynn of the Chronicle is holding it in a city that has sealed every road around it.

The brother's real story

Alive in Flynn of the Chronicle's keeping alongside Brogan's evidence and the proof from Case 016. Three things with nowhere to go.

The accurate picture of the detective

She left Case 017 carrying her second lie from him. The gap remains categorical.

The debt to Dale

Paid Case 019. What she holds now is not a lien. It is a knowledge, used again in Case 026 to name what the detective had to do, again in Case 030 to name what he'd taken on without noticing, again in Case 031 to name the leash outright, again in Case 033 to name a cost still coming rather than one already paid, again in Case 034 — this time before the case even started, a warning he heard and walked past anyway — again in Case 035, naming a cost only visible after the fact, again in Case 036, refusing to let him dress the year's true price up as anything gentler than what it was, once more in Case 037, refusing to let him call burning an old friend's history an act of mercy when the last name on that page was his own, and once more still in Case 038, making him admit mid-case that he'd actually checked a client's word before acting on it, then naming, at the close, the rare thing he'd actually managed — his own honor and a stranger's kid brother's bread, kept in the same hand.

Marchetti's twenty-year protocol of never asking first

Dead as of Case 021. Case 030 showed the other side of that: once he does ask, he asks for a favor he can collect on later. Case 031 confirmed he'll keep asking. Case 032 showed the limit of it — there's a ledger even he won't ask about. Case 033 confirmed he isn't behind everything in this city — some of it is just an ordinary greedy man with no leash on him at all. Case 034 confirmed it a second time, Case 035 a third, Case 036 a fourth, Case 037 a fifth in a different key entirely — the one time he did surface, he asked for nothing and confirmed a truth without being paid to — and Case 038 a sixth: asked only to confirm whose gate a promoter had rented, he did, and refused to lift a finger for free about anything more.

The erased clerk

Signed what needed signing and was made to not exist as a person of record. Not gone from the drawer.

The false read's utility

The detective gave it. The auditor absorbed it and left satisfied. Spent.

The machine's assumption that the detective found nothing

Operating inside the machine now.

The supervisor's concealment

It did not survive its own apparatus. The carbon copy made it into the intake. The books came clean. The supervisor went down. His ability to hide what he took is gone, and so is he.

The detective's anonymity to the machine's honest instruments — dead as of Case 025. The license examiner has an accurate, first-hand read of him: a man capable of both a constructed cold trail and a corrective signed in his own hand.

The theory that the detective's method works on whatever the machine sends — dead as of Case 025. It worked on a corruptible auditor and a corruptible apparatus. It did not work on an honest examiner running a fair process. She read straight through him.

The detective's license held in easy, unscrutinized reserve

Dead. It passed through forfeiture pending and came back in good standing, but scrutinized, on record, and known.

The possibility the detective could help the Farrows again without being seen — dead as of Case 026. He had to walk to the examiner's own desk and ask, in person, a second time.

The next flagged family's claim

Denied in Case 026. Its aftermath played out in full in Case 027.

The possibility of an honest road reaching the eviction in time — dead as of Case 027. The road existed. The clock beat it.

The girl's own future

Spent in Case 027 to settle her family's debt to the Blue Room. She is alive. Case 032 confirmed she still holds to that bargain by choice, not just by the house's terms — she refused rescue rather than let it cost the others bound alongside her.

The chorus girl

Pushed from the theater flies by a patron paying to keep his name clean of her. Her sister came looking for the truth and got it. The killer is in the law's hands, not the underworld's or the machine's.

The theory that a clean win always costs someone

Dead as of Case 028, at least once. No favor, no debt, no mark. Dale's already warned it won't hold twice running — and Case 030 proved her right. Case 033 proved a clean win can happen a second time, and Case 038 proved it a third — Dale's warning didn't disappear across either repeat; it just changed shape into costs that arrive on someone else's account instead of a clean case's own.

The threat to the husband's life on that floor

Dead as of Case 029. The detective pulled him off it breathing.

The hoofer, twenty-six

Dead in the marathon's earlier hours, before the detective was hired. Signed away as natural causes by a floor doctor paid to keep the contest turning. The detective found the truth of it and put that truth in the drawer instead of on any record. Not corrected.

The question of whose docks were really being collected on

Dead as of Case 030. A dockers' widow, not a rival, running a survival racket in Marchetti's name.

The detective's independence from Marchetti

Dead as of Case 030, and Case 031 showed exactly how the ownership works in practice: on call, whenever Marchetti needs a name nobody doubts.

The detective's own word as something only he controls

Dead as of Case 031. Marchetti spent it once, borrowing the detective's voice to call a hard contract fair, and nothing yet says he can't spend it again.

The fighter's gym as his own

Dead as of Case 031. Signed, terms softened but not broken, now part of Marchetti's stable.

The theory that Marchetti answers to no one in this city

Dead as of Case 032. Something above him exists. It has a book, and it has a name he won't say and won't cross.

The idea that the detective could simply buy the girl free

Dead as of Case 032. She refused before the house had to. The debt is hers to hold, not his to erase.

The theory that every big fish in this town has a bigger one holding its leash — dead as of Case 033, at least once. The landlord who framed a boilerman for his own arson answered to nobody — no boss, no badge, no leash. Just cheap, cruel, and finally caught.

Sam Aldous's good name

Restored as of Case 033. Twenty years without a burn on his floor, cleared of a fire he never set.

The idea that a free door only costs the detective, and only ever costs him nothing — dead as of Case 034. It cost a stranger everything, and the detective didn't see the bill coming until it had already been paid.

The theory that Dale's warnings are retrospective only

Dead as of Case 034. She named the danger before he ever left the office this time, and it turned out exactly right.

The theory that being incorruptible protects an honest instrument from removal — dead as of Case 035. The examiner's own honesty was the exact material a manufactured complaint turned into evidence against her.

The detective's remaining anonymity from the civic record itself — dead as of Case 035, this time by his own choice rather than the machine's reach. He wrote his own name onto a reorganization record as a named, interested party, and it can never be unfiled.

The clean way out he was offered in Case 036

Dead the moment Flynn laid it on the table. He turned it down rather than leave the question half-open over the examiner's desk.

The detective's ability to vanish into this city entirely

Dead as of Case 036. He is now formally entered in the licensing register — verified head to toe — with only the name line left honestly, permanently blank. Known is not the same as unseen, and unseen is what he's lost.

The last thing the year Case 025 opened was still holding back — dead as of Case 036. Dale named it plainly: whether a man could go all the way through this town without ever once being written down. He can't, not anymore. The dark to disappear into has been spent in full.

The idea that the detective had no life before the office

Dead as of Case 037. He had a bench at a hiring gate, a set of shoulders like anyone else's, and a friend who knew him well enough to sell his name for a call-slip.

The theory that this winter's costs only ever land on strangers or on the detective himself — dead as of Case 037. This time the cost was old, inherited, and personal: a name sold years before any of this began, discovered only because a friend died and left it behind.

The theory that Dale's warning about vetting a client's own word would go unanswered forever — dead as of Case 038. Four cases after she first raised it, the detective checked a client's story before he moved on it instead of after, and made himself say so.

The theory that Doyle's fate

Dead for refusing to throw a bout — was simply how this city always settles that particular refusal — dead as of Case 038. A different fighter said the same no, and this time he lived and won clean.
