The ledger · spoilers insideBury the truth

The detective was hired to verify a waterfront parish's charity ledgers ahead of a diocesan audit, where a dead deacon had already been assigned the blame to everyone's quiet satisfaction. He found the proof he was not supposed to find — a ledger entry dated a week after the deacon was in the ground, and only one man still living had kept a key — and then learned that the old pastor had forgiven that man long ago, in private, for nothing, and written nothing down. He filed the books clean, sealed the truth in a drawer, and Dale named what he had actually done with it.
