A blind organ-tuner came to the detective with nothing but sound — an uneven step and a wet cough he swore belonged to the man who killed his brother, now sheltered behind the parish's public forgiveness. The detective traced the cough to a disc beneath a hymn and confirmed what the tuner's ear had always known, then walked into the chapel and found the forgiveness itself was the wall: not evidence enough to breach, not thin enough to argue around. He left certain to the bone and empty-handed, carrying only the shape of a new thing — that absolution, properly bought, was armor no proof could climb.
