A traveling revival pitched salvation on the empty lot at the edge of Calloway Bay, and when its collection came up short, the advance man pinned the theft on the orphan boy who swept the tent. The detective had until Friday to break the frame before the wagons rolled the lie to the next town and made it permanent, and he got there with a day to spare -- the boy walked clear and the advance man walked to a cell. The revival moved on without its skimmer, and forgiveness in Calloway Bay quietly acquired a going rate.

Three carried names; 034 may add Eddie a fourth. 035-036 cost him his own exposure; 037 surfaced an old debt run the other way — his own name spent by someone else years back. 038-043 added nothing owed to him. 044 may add a fifth — the honest woman's…

Opened Case 048: the revival's advance man went to a cell but the going rate stayed on record. Case 049 confirmed the rate sticks and found an institutional home: the Chronicle runs a paid redemption desk — absolution by the column-inch, now institutionalized…

As of 036 a formal, verified fact, not a mere absence. The door name "Flynn" (never his own; not Flynn of the Chronicle) was scraped off the glass in 025; people call him sunshine, shamus, detective, mister, pal. The licensing machine holds his complete entry…

The detective carries the named debt, three names wide: the stranger at the courthouse corner; the erased clerk (name on the condemnation order and the auditor's slip); and the Case 027 young woman, whose future paid for a race he lost. OPEN: Case 034 may add…

Clean_win (5th after 028/033/038/042). A traveling revival's advance man pinned a short collection on the orphan boy who swept the tent; no boss, no lever, no Blue Room behind the frame. The detective broke it before the wagons rolled Friday — the boy walked…

Alive, off the force since Case 013, his last move left in Flynn of the Chronicle's keeping. Returned in Case 043 to call in an old dock-beat loyalty the badge can no longer back; walked away believing a debt was settled clean, not knowing what the detective…

Paid Case 019; what she holds now is knowledge, not a lien. She's used it to name the detective's costs across nearly every case since (026–048): the leash, prices still coming, choices made *for* people not *with* them, costs landing on whoever refuses to…

Dead as of Case 028 (no favor, debt, or mark), again in 033, 038, 042. When a win isn't clean the cost still lands — on a bystander (039, 040) or, in Case 041, inside the detective himself for the first time. Case 042 was clean a fourth time, Dale with…

Dead as of Case 031. Marchetti spent it once, borrowing the detective's voice to call a hard contract fair, and in Case 044 spent it again — on a dock purge list, with the debt still open after. Case 045: the same word cleared a frame built from the cut the…

The theory that every big fish in this town has a bigger one holding its leash — dead as of Case 033: the landlord who framed a boilerman for his own arson answered to nobody, just cheap and cruel, and was caught. Case 040 confirmed it — the sponsor who…

The idea that the revival's economy of forgiveness was hidden from Calloway Bay — dead as of Case 048. The advance man went to a cell but the going rate stayed on record. Salvation had been priced; now the pricing is known.
