Brogan came back one last time to call in an old dock-beat loyalty, asking the detective to hold an aging dockhand's gate call so the man's family could eat, and doing it meant walking into a machine that finally had the detective's face on file. The detective went to Marchetti, who let the old man's call stand for nothing, then showed him the new shape of things: the top ran on borrowed loyalty now, no muscle and no name required, only markers passed hand to hand until no one knew whose debt it had originally been. The old man stepped forward into the light off the water and his family ate, Brogan walked off believing his oath had held clean, and the question underneath the whole morning quietly shifted from who sits at the top to what a man will stay loyal to once everyone's loyalty has already been bought.
