The Cold Slip

A dock widow had watched a boss's man rig a winch to kill her husband, and the same crew was ready to let an innocent partner take the blame for it while dangling a wiped debt marker in exchange for her silence. The detective built the case on iron and paperwork first so her word wouldn't have to carry it alone, and when she spoke anyway the gate went quiet around her but she kept talking. The hand that loosened the brake went to a cell and the blamed partner went home clean, yet the walking boss who'd ordered it all stepped untouched into a better berth uptown, leaving her family's place at the gate uncertain.

The vow's letter holds (he took no marker of his own), but its spirit broke in Case 032: he walked into the Blue Room and took something from its desk. Case 039 tested it sideways — a dock crew offered to wipe a dead man's Blue Room marker for a widow's…

New Case 039. The widow's silence was bought not with cash but with her family's place at the morning call — the gate can threaten a witness, not just a worker. Untouched by Cases 040-048.

New Case 039. An earlier winch death under the same walking boss, quietly signed off years back, is what made the second death provable as murder rather than misfortune. Whether that earlier victim's family ever learns the truth is OPEN. Untouched by Cases…

New in Case 039. The moment she spoke, the men who'd fed her family all winter looked at the harbor instead of at her. What that ostracism costs her, and whether it ever thaws, is completely unresolved. Untouched by Cases 040-048.

The dock-killing order-giver who walked into a better berth was caught three cases later as a cannery superintendent, when a payroll-skim audit downed him before Marchetti's indifference could shield him again. Closed.

The Blue Room (entered Case 027): an underworld debt-holder trading in futures, not cash; took the Case 027 girl's future for her family's home. Case 032 the detective walked in, found her name in the ledger's margin, tried to buy her back — refused by her,…

Partial_justice (3rd after 031/035). A dock widow, sole witness who could clear a framed partner after a walking boss's man rigged a fatal winch, was offered her dead husband's Blue Room marker wiped for swearing accident; she testified anyway. Brakeman…

Clean_win (4th after 028/033/038). A cannery forewoman refused to name the women organizing her line. The detective recognized the threatening superintendent as the same walking boss who walked free in Case 039's dock killing, traced his leverage to a payroll…

Dead as of Case 021: once he asks it's for a collectible favor (030), and he keeps asking (031) — but there's a ledger even he won't touch (032). Cases 033–041 confirmed he isn't behind everything; some is ordinary greed with no leash. In Case 042 Marchetti…

The idea that a witness who tells the truth walks away from it whole — dead as of Case 039. She spoke, and the gate that had fed her family all winter turned its back on her the same afternoon.
