The winter's famous free door drew a woman with a hard-luck story cut to fit the detective's grace, and he took her brother's case for nothing, never hearing what sat under her voice. His own two feet led Eddie straight to the collectors she'd fingered him for all along, and her marker cleared on Eddie's back before the detective understood what he'd been used for. The door stayed unlocked when they left anyway, because closing it now would have cost him the one thing the winter hadn't yet taken.

Free work in Case 034 shifted the debt onto Eddie instead of the woman; open what Eddie paid, alive or dead. Untouched 040-048.

The detective carries the named debt, three names wide: the stranger at the courthouse corner; the erased clerk (name on the condemnation order and the auditor's slip); and the Case 027 young woman, whose future paid for a race he lost. OPEN: Case 034 may add…

Someone_pays (first in the series): the free door drew exactly the plant Dale warned of, and the detective's own free labor became the mechanism delivering an innocent man to a debt collector clearing someone else's marker. He took no fee and never saw the…

A man with a small debt-shaped hole of his own, fingered by a stranger's staged grief and paid to collectors on a marker that was never his to carry. Case 034's cost, arriving a beat after the detective understood what his own two feet had just done.

Dead as of Case 021: once he asks it's for a collectible favor (030), and he keeps asking (031) — but there's a ledger even he won't touch (032). Cases 033–041 confirmed he isn't behind everything; some is ordinary greed with no leash. In Case 042 Marchetti…

The idea that a free door only costs the detective, and only ever costs him nothing — dead as of Case 034: it cost a stranger everything, the bill unseen until already paid. Case 040 confirmed it — dead air cost him nothing and cost the woman he was helping…

Dead as of Case 034. She named the danger before he ever left the office this time, and it turned out exactly right.
