The ledger · spoilers insideThe bill comes in

A frightened wife arrived near midnight with her husband's one-way stub and hired the detective to find Walter before the 5:10 interstate bus carried him out of Calloway Bay for good. Working the depot through the small hours, he discovered that the man already asking after Walter was collecting on a truth the detective himself had once buried, and Walter was only where the debt had landed. The 5:10 pulled out on schedule with Walter aboard; the detective was left at the empty bench, the board already flipping to the 6:40, the bill finally in and owing to no one but himself.
