The ledger · spoilers insideClean win

The detective cracked a forged-debt racket bleeding a string of old-timers and put the lender away clean, but the case had been told to him backward from its real end — a night-closing scene at an all-night automat where one ruined man freely forgave another for a drowned boy twenty years gone. He spent the whole investigation reading Tobin's mercy as leverage, Dale's question as rhetoric, and Sowell's refusal of gratitude as guilt, because a season of pricing what forgiveness costs in this city had left him unable to recognize the thing given for nothing. He got there a full night too late to understand what he had witnessed, and went home with the win on the wire and the only free absolution the city had managed in years already closed behind him.
