Brogan came off the sidelines to call in an old dock-beat loyalty -- the kind a badge could once cover and no longer could -- and asked the detective to stand up for a squeezed man named Rourke without saying what standing up would cost. The detective kept his word, but keeping it meant going hat in hand to Marchetti, and Marchetti let Rourke's name stand only after making clear the favor was written down. Rourke kept his gate call, Brogan walked away believing the debt was settled, and the detective was left one turn deeper on a leash neither of them would ever call by that name.

Marchetti neither employer nor antagonist since the streak began: absent 032-036, incidental unpaid source 037-038, absent 039-041, reappeared 042 as the cannery's labor-contract holder but indifferent to the superintendent's fate. Case 043: directly fielded…

Marchetti hired the detective twice (030, 031), then nothing since: incidental unpaid source 037-038, absent 039-041, reappeared 042 as the cannery's contract holder but indifferent. Case 043: the detective came to him voluntarily on Brogan's behalf;…

Dale named it outright in Case 031: the leash only feels like a favor until the day it doesn't. In Case 043 it tightened by one explicit loop — the detective went hat in hand to Marchetti for Brogan's sake, and Marchetti let him know the favor was written…

Brogan reappeared in Case 043 — off the force, carrying dock-beat loyalties a badge can no longer back — and walked away believing his old debt was settled clean. Returned again in 047, called in the old dock-beat loyalty one last time; the old man ate, and…

New 043. Brogan walked away from Case 043 believing a badge-era loyalty was honored clean, the old debt settled. The detective is holding the actual cost alone, in the dark. Case 044 deepened the chain — the 043 marker, born of Brogan's ask, was called in and…

Pauly Marchetti, the crime boss. Hired the detective directly in Case 030 (first time a boss's money bought his time; reclaimed his docks from a dockers' widow's survival racket run in his name) and marked him a "clean man" unasked; Case 031 drew on that name…

Pyrrhic_win (3rd after 030/036). Brogan called in a dock-beat loyalty the badge can no longer cover; the detective kept his word by going hat in hand to Marchetti, who let Rourke's name stand at the gate and wrote the favor down. Rourke's call is clear.…

Paid Case 019; what she holds now is knowledge, not a lien. She's used it to name the detective's costs across nearly every case since (026–048): the leash, prices still coming, choices made *for* people not *with* them, costs landing on whoever refuses to…

Dead as of Case 021: once he asks it's for a collectible favor (030), and he keeps asking (031) — but there's a ledger even he won't touch (032). Cases 033–041 confirmed he isn't behind everything; some is ordinary greed with no leash. In Case 042 Marchetti…

Dead as of Case 028 (no favor, debt, or mark), again in 033, 038, 042. When a win isn't clean the cost still lands — on a bystander (039, 040) or, in Case 041, inside the detective himself for the first time. Case 042 was clean a fourth time, Dale with…

Dead as of Case 030, and Case 031 showed exactly how the ownership works in practice: on call, whenever Marchetti needs a name nobody doubts. Case 043 deepened it: the detective came to Marchetti of his own need, and Marchetti received the ask and wrote it…

Dead as of Case 043. He reappeared, off the force but carrying old obligations, and spent a debt through the detective without ever knowing he'd drawn on it. Dead again as of Case 047: he came back a second time, walked away believing his oath held clean, and…
