Widow at the harbor gate wanted a clean death certified as accident, but her husband had bought his call-slips by selling out fellow dockers, the detective's own name once among them. Marchetti confirmed it without ceremony, and the folded list of names ended up in the detective's stove — burned so the hiring hall would pay her on a lie she'd never have to hear disproved. He let her keep the man she buried instead of the one who'd sold him, and Dale made him own that choice rather than dress it up as mercy.

New in Case 037: the detective and Gil go back to before either had a name that meant anything — a shared bench at the hiring gate. Open: what else that history holds and whether anyone else from those days is still out there. Untouched 038-048.

New in Case 037. Gil bought months of steady call-slips by selling out fellow dockers to whoever ran the gate list. How long it went on, and how many men beside the detective it touched, is unresolved. Untouched by Cases 038-048.

New in Case 037. Years back, before the office, before the name on the door, Gil sold the detective's own name for a call-slip. What that cost him then — a bad week, a beating, a debt — has never been told. Untouched by Cases 038-048.

The first knock the whole city could see coming turned out to be the gentlest possible test: a dock widow, not a stranger working an angle. Closed; tracked forward under known_not_named.

Bury_the_truth (4th after 017/023/029). The widow's husband did die in a genuine hiring-gate accident but had bought his call-slips by selling out the men beside him — the detective's own name once among them. He confirmed the true part on record and burned…

Alive, off the force since Case 013, his last move left in Flynn of the Chronicle's keeping. Returned in Case 043 to call in an old dock-beat loyalty the badge can no longer back; walked away believing a debt was settled clean, not knowing what the detective…

Dead as of Case 021: once he asks it's for a collectible favor (030), and he keeps asking (031) — but there's a ledger even he won't touch (032). Cases 033–041 confirmed he isn't behind everything; some is ordinary greed with no leash. In Case 042 Marchetti…

Dead as of Case 037. He had a bench at a hiring gate, a set of shoulders like anyone else's, and a friend who knew him well enough to sell his name for a call-slip.

The theory that this winter's costs only ever land on strangers or on the detective himself — dead as of Case 037. This time the cost was old, inherited, and personal: a name sold years before any of this began, discovered only because a friend died and left…

The theory that burying a truth always costs the detective the same way twice — dead as of Case 041. Case 037 burned a truth to spare a widow and cost him part of his own past; Case 041 kept one and cost only a private peace he carries alone as long as the…
