A grieving, plainly honest woman hired the detective to prove her chorus-girl sister hadn't accidentally fallen from the theater flies, and he found that the man who'd been paying to keep his name clean of her — a patron with no rap sheet and no boss to shield him — was the one who'd pushed her. No favor was owed and no debt was called in; for once the proof held on a killer the law could actually take, and the case closed clean. Dale reminded him not to get used to it — the city doesn't hand out two clean wins in a row.
