Case 029 "The Last Number" — a plain-spoken dancer hired the detective to check whether a waterfront marathon was honest before she spent her dying husband's last strength on it, and he found the fix, the bought-off floor doctor, and an earlier dancer's death signed away as natural. He buried it all — the fix, the doctor, the death — to keep the man on his feet a little longer, choosing Dale's disapproval over the truth that would have stripped his wife of everything she'd risked to win.
