Marchetti broke twenty years of protocol to summon the detective first and hand him a warning that hadn't originated with Marchetti at all — the men upstairs had noticed a thread being pulled, and the Blue Room was their only soft way of saying stop. The detective spent the night moving the courier who'd carried the message out of the ledger before anyone could reconcile her presence to it, putting her on a train and clear before dawn. The warning sat on the blotter, heard and understood, and the detective told Dale he hadn't yet decided whether the smart thing and the right thing were the same thing this time.
