When Frankie Slim turned up dead under the el — clipped clean and without a word left for the family — the detective recognized a kill that came from somewhere above Marchetti, not from him, and that single careless reach cracked twenty years of untouchability open. For the first time Pauly Marchetti and the man at the top were not the same animal, and Brogan had a body that ran up instead of nowhere, though pulling the thread meant standing next to it. The case closed with a woman in a doorway delivering the lesson: the man at the top learned how to burn a wire by watching the detective do it first, Frankie's account was settled, and the next name was already written closer to home than any before it.
