When an institutional audit — not Marchetti — surfaced the name of a small man whose location the detective had once sold, he spent himself quietly to move the man out of the city's reach through a back channel that left no trace of his own hand, taking on a new debt with eyes open and sending nothing with the man but a keepsake that might never matter to anyone. The man went out into the fog believing a stranger's luck had saved him, never knowing whose hand had moved him or what it cost. For the first time in a long time, the detective did something that nobody would ever know about — and that wasn't the same thing as it meaning nothing.
