A torch singer from the detective's past walked back into the office carrying a photograph that should have been ash, hunted by a bagman who'd been selling her silence by the week — and the detective traded a favor to Marchetti to make the squeeze disappear. She left clean, but Marchetti left knowing exactly what the detective would spend himself for, and that knowledge was the real price. The case closed with the woman free and the detective one debt deeper, holding nothing but the satisfaction of a job finished and a road to an old killing quietly closed off behind him.
