The man the detective had chased for twelve cases took a public appointment that put his name behind a door no private eye could open, and every thread the detective had held went slack at once. Marchetti walked free, Brogan said his piece and left the last move where he couldn't carry it, and the reporter told the detective there was nothing printable about a public servant who had, on paper, done nothing wrong. The city stayed exactly as it was, the name grew quieter in official ink, and the detective learned there had never been anything left to win.
