The detective spent the one currency he had never touched — the name of the man at the top — not as an exposure, but as a signal that he was done being something the city could quietly manage. He pulled the move back from print when he saw that route only buried the messenger, then delivered it instead in a room where Marchetti had to carry it upstairs or pretend he hadn't heard, ending a long truce either way. By morning the name was in play and the man at the top, untouched for now, would have to answer the detective for the first time instead of the other way around.
